Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan
(The anime is 12 episodes of moe fangirl madness. But dudes can enjoy it too!)
So I had this pre-written review that made Warhammer 40k references out the wazoo. Since I know that not many anime fans even know what Warhammer 40k is I decided to trash it and just give you the meaty portion of the review.
Is the motherf!cker good or not?
Gee willikers is it! Not only is it one of those pretty boy reverse harem titles that girls like (i.e. Fushigi Yuugi & Ouran HS Host Club) but there’s also quite a bit of exciting and tension filled sword fights that make what we love about the Samurai that much more clear.
A little background for us researcher types please.
Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan is based off the PS2 Otome Game (recently ported to PSP from my understanding) that was produced by Idea/Design Factory. And has now been made into an anime under the masterful brush of Studio DEEN (Fate/Stay Night; Fruits Basket).
What sets it apart from other Otome titles?
Well for one thing it isn’t just about the comedic angst of character interaction and dialogue. There’s a subtle yet very dark undertone that you know clearly exists but can be very surprising when it rears its ugly head. It also takes an interesting yet very liberal look on one of Japan’s most bloody eras: The Meiji Restoration of the 1860’s (Think Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X).
How do I get my hands on this title?
Well Crunchyroll.com says they directly support the industry by sharing the income they take in with the animation studios in Japan. How true that is I’m not certain but they still exist so it must bare some amount of truth. I was lucky enough to pick up Japanese TV through some fancy satellite tinkering out here in Mosul, Iraq. Oh you Iraqis and your innovative minds. If only most of you weren’t so damn lazy.
Welp that’s it for the review. If you’d like to find out more about Hakuouki (a collection of thoughts ;D) then I would suggest Google. The game has been out for a while and I might just pick it up myself for PSP.
/Koji loves you!
